Watch: How Much Does SEO Really Cost in 2026? — WISE Digital Partners
The short answer: the cost of search engine optimization averages $2,917 per month, and 63% of buyers spend between $500 and $5,000 a month, according to Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers (updated 15 August 2024). US agencies quote higher: Boulder SEO Marketing puts the mainstream range at $1,500–$5,000 per month for most businesses (guide bylined 24 November 2025).
Those two numbers are not in conflict. One is what every provider worldwide charges; the other is what a US agency asks. Which one applies to you depends on the pricing model you buy, the provider you buy it from, and whether AI search is in scope. This page works through all three, with a source on every figure.
How much does search engine optimization cost right now?
Three reference points cover most of the market, and each comes from a different kind of survey:
| Reference point | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average monthly spend, all providers worldwide | $2,917/mo | Ahrefs, 439 providers |
| Share of buyers spending $500–$5,000/mo | 63% | Ahrefs |
| Mainstream US agency retainer | $1,500–$5,000/mo | Boulder SEO Marketing |
| Local-only providers, average | $1,557/mo | Ahrefs |
| Providers serving worldwide clients, average | $3,474/mo | Ahrefs |
The gap between the $1,557 local average and the $3,474 worldwide one is 123%. Provider type moves it further still: agencies charge 138% more than freelancers for the same monthly retainer. Geography and provider type both move the number more than scope does for most buyers.
Why the average is not the price you will actually pay
An average is a poor planning number because SEO pricing is a long tail. In the same Ahrefs survey, the single most common retainer band was $501–$1,000 per month, chosen by 20.4% of providers — well below the $2,917 mean. Almost seven in ten providers (68.8%) bill $2,000 a month or less.
Three variables explain most of the spread:
- Business size. For small businesses, 42% of providers charge between $250 and $1,000 per month; the average small-business spend is about $1,557.
- Experience. Providers with five to ten years in the market average $3,648 per month. Those with two years or less average $1,540 — a 137% difference for the same nominal service.
- Client geography. Local-only work averages $1,557; worldwide client bases average $3,474.
If you have been quoted $3,500 a month, you are being quoted at roughly the agency average, not at the market average. That is defensible for competitive national keywords and overpriced for a five-page local site.
The five pricing models, compared
Every quote you receive is one of five shapes. The typical level for each, from the two surveys above:
| Model | What it typically costs | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | Agencies $3,209/mo; consultancies $3,250/mo; freelancers $1,349/mo | Ahrefs |
| Hourly consulting | $111/hr average; consultancies $171.18, agencies $98.90, freelancers $71.59 | Ahrefs |
| Per project | Agencies $9,507.84/project; consultancies $8,685.53; freelancers $2,348.63 | Ahrefs |
| Self-serve software | $29–$549/mo | humanswith.ai, priced 7 September 2026 |
| Performance-based | No published price band in either survey | Ahrefs; humanswith.ai |
Retainers dominate the market: 78.2% of providers bill monthly, 48.9% take per-project work and 34.8% bill hourly (providers can use more than one model). Per-project fees cluster in the $2,501–$5,000 band, which 21.2% of providers use.
Two rows deserve a warning. Hourly looks cheap per unit and is the most common way to buy an audit or a migration, but hourly work stops when the invoice stops — nobody owns the ranking. Performance-based pricing is listed because buyers ask for it; neither survey we checked reports a published price band for it, so any specific percentage you are quoted is a bilateral negotiation, not a market rate.
Self-serve software is the only model where the entire price is public before you speak to anyone. Pricing runs from $29 to $549 a month for AI-visibility monitoring in the humanswith.ai comparison, which measured vendor pricing pages directly on 7 September 2026. That publisher sells in the same category, so read its numbers as a price survey rather than a review.
What moves the price most
If you only control one variable, control provider type. Ahrefs' summary of its own data is that agencies charge 138% more than freelancers for monthly retainers — $3,209 against $1,349. The premium buys account management, a team and continuity; it does not automatically buy better work.
Scope is the second lever, and it is the one most quotes obscure. A retainer priced at $2,000 and one priced at $4,000 can deliver the same count of articles. Before comparing, ask each provider to price a single named deliverable — one 1,500-word article, one technical fix, one month of citation tracking — and compare that unit price. Two quotes become comparable the moment they share a unit.
The third lever is contract length. Ahrefs reports that 5–10-year providers average $3,648 a month against $1,540 for providers with two years or less; part of that premium is experience, and part is that experienced providers sell annual agreements. Ask what the monthly rate becomes if you commit for twelve months, and what it becomes if you leave after three.
What AI search adds to the bill
Traditional cost guides price Google blue links only. In 2026 a second line item exists: getting cited inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.
The cheapest entry point is measurement software, at $29–$549 per month across the vendors humanswith.ai priced. Above that, pricing becomes custom. In the same article, Profound is quoted at $2,250 per month for a 600-prompt package, and the publisher's own plans range from $149 to $4,977 per month. Neither figure is a market average; together they show the shape of the custom tier.
What you get for that money should be measurable. HeyEmmett's published case studies report Assembo.ai going from 17 to 166 ChatGPT citations and from 1,460 to 2,630 monthly organic clicks across a three-month campaign, and TonerConnect rising from 521 to 845 monthly organic visitors within two months, with ChatGPT citations going from 9 to 261 by month five. Those are individual client results, not a guarantee — but they are the kind of before-and-after a provider should be able to show you before you sign.
If a quote does not name the engines it covers, it is not priced for them. Our GEO guide explains what the work involves, and the 48-hour AI SEO, AEO, GEO and LLMO guide covers how the disciplines fit together.
How to compare two SEO quotes in 30 minutes
Four checks separate a quote you can evaluate from one you cannot:
- Price one deliverable. Get a unit price for a single article, fix or tracking month from both providers, then compare units rather than totals.
- Confirm the engines in scope. If ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews are not named in the contract, nobody is accountable for citations.
- Compare the six-month total. Setup fees, content fees and minimum terms can make a $3,000 quote more expensive than a $4,500 all-inclusive one.
- Check ownership. You should hold your analytics, content and site credentials at all times, whichever model you buy.
If you would rather run the work in-house, the same comparison applies to software: HeyEmmett's free tools let you check AI visibility before paying for anything, and the pricing page lists the plans.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should a small business spend on SEO?
Most small businesses land between $250 and $1,000 per month: 42% of providers in Ahrefs' survey charge in that band, and the average small-business spend is about $1,557 per month. If a retainer is out of reach, self-serve software runs $29–$549 per month and puts the execution on your team.
Is cheap SEO worth it?
Price alone does not answer that. Ask what the cheapest quote actually delivers: a named number of articles, a named technical fix, or a named report. The lowest published band in either survey is self-serve software at $29–$549 per month, which is legitimate because you do the work. When a retainer is priced far below the $501–$1,000 band that 20.4% of providers use, the question to ask is which deliverable was removed to get there.
How long before SEO pays for itself?
No provider survey publishes a reliable payback period, so treat any specific timeline you are quoted as a sales claim. The closest verifiable data is campaign results: HeyEmmett's case studies show traffic moving within two months for TonerConnect and citation counts moving within three months for Assembo.ai. Your timeline depends on the starting position and the competitiveness of your keywords.
Do I need a separate budget for AI search?
Usually yes, if you want citations tracked and improved. Monitoring software alone runs $29–$549 per month. Custom programs are quoted per prompt set rather than published: Profound was quoted at $2,250 per month for 600 prompts, and humanswith.ai's own plans run from $149 to $4,977 per month.
Is hourly or retainer cheaper?
Hourly averages $111 per hour, and 90% of providers charge $150 or less. It is the cheapest way to buy a defined task such as an audit. A retainer costs more per month but covers ongoing work, and 78.2% of providers bill that way. Per-project work sits between them, at an average of $9,507.84 per project for agencies.
